Starting from October 2024, the average processing times for residency examinations at regional immigration offices across Japan will be published monthly on the Immigration Services Agency's website.
This will allow applicants to quickly access the most up-to-date information on the average time required for processing recent examinations.
Applicable Applications:This includes applications for extension of stay, change of status of residence, etc. However, application for residence statuses such as “Diplomat” and “Official” are excluded.
Processing Times:The published data will reflect the average number of business days from the acceptance of an application to its approval. Please note that cases resulting in disapproval or withdrawal are not included.
Important Points to Note:
The processing period includes the date of notification of approval (the date the applicant is requested to visit the immigration office). Therefore, the actual examination period may be shorter than the published number of days.
For applications under the "Designated Activities" status, the processing period may vary depending on the nature of the activity.
Trends and Considerations for Processing Times
Recent trends indicate that residency examination periods are becoming longer. When planning an application, it is important to allow sufficient time in your schedule. For instance, if you plan to travel overseas during the processing of your extension of stay application, ensure to coordinate your schedule accordingly.
By checking the latest published data, you can accurately track the progress of your application and make informed plans for a smoother process.
